La Gallería

One of the favorite foods of almost every Costa Rican are "gallos", do you know what they are? no? Let us explain... a "gallo" consists of ... a tortilla, usually made of corn, in which you can add on top products such as meat, ham, cheese, etc.

This type of food is very liked because is super easy to make and because of how delicious it can be.

That's why when we heard about the opening in Costa Rica of a restaurant specialized in "gallos", we had to find out more and of course, visit them and check for ourselves what it was about.

In the heart of San José, near the National Children's Hospital, located in a cozy and lovely place is, La Galleria, a restaurant dedicated to honoring this type of food so dear to all Costa Ricans.

A "gallo" is usually a simple meal and although delicious, it is not usually equated with high level gourmet meals and that is where La Galleria surprises us, because they manage to make a very simple meal, something of very high gourmet levels, giving its customers an unexpected gastronomic experience.

We started our gourmet journey very excited by what was coming... keep reading and you’ll understand why ...

Chorigallo

3 handmade tortillas made in the spot with chorizo, mixed salad, cherry tomato, chimichurri and roasted garlic mayonnaise!

This is not at all the typical "gallo" that is prepared in our homes, no sir! this is THE gallo of all gallos!

Already with just trying one dish this guys have managed to surprise us ... but this is not over ... there are more “gallos” to try!

Caribbean Gallo

This “gallo” as we are told is inspired by the famous Rice and Beans that is prepared in the Caribbean part of Costa Rica and consists of 3 handmade tortillas, cooked right there when you order, red beans with coconut milk, shredded chicken in Caribbean sauce, sweet plantain slices and creole salad.

At this point, you should be as amazed and hungry as we are, right?

You see? We knew you would!

But wait, there's more!

Pulled Pork Gallos (mini version)

Handmade tortillas, pulled pork with homemade barbecue sauce with panela (a sugarcane product, popular in Latin America) and sweet cabbage salad ... this will make you lick your plate clean!

As if this was not enough, they bring us the ...

Sánguche Año Viejo

Inspired by the dinner of New Year’s Eve on December 31 that is typically done in many houses in Costa Rica, so it has slices of pork leg marinated in the oven, cheese, fresh sweet cabbage salad and homemade rosemary bread. On the side, you will get delicious potatoes wedges with your choice of mayo/sauce (roasted garlic, sriracha, coconut and curry, cilantro and red bell pepper).

Definitely La Galleria is not joking around with their “gallos”, their gastronomic proposal is worthy of a standing ovation, not only for their creativity with the ingenious and well executed dishes, but also for the detail of their plates and their desire to see each customer with a big smile on their face after trying out their creations.

La Galleria is the result of the dream of many years of Sofia Campos and Luis Chaves, who took a few minutes to sit with us and shared a little about their story and how they got to where they are now.

Their story of reaching their dream is admirable, as well as the passion with which they manage their business that is easily reflected in their food and the love they have put decorating their restaurant.

We would totally recommend everyone to visit this amazing place, we are sure that after leaving, apart from a full stomach, you will have a big smile on your face of pure satisfaction.

So, what are you waiting for? If you are in Costa Rica or will visit soon go and try for yourself all the delicious dishes La Galleria offers!

To Sofia and Luis ... thank you so much for inviting us to your restaurant and making us so many delightful dishes, we really loved your gastronomic proposal, we wish you all the luck in the world!
